Ori and the Dance of the Dandelion Puffs

Writer's picture: Sandra PetrovaSandra Petrova

In a beautiful meadow under a big mountain called The Fallen Giant, there lived a very special dandelion named Orion, or Ori for short. The dandelions in the meadow had a story about the mountain. They believed a giant slept there, who had fallen from the sky and would one day wake up.

Ori was the most beautiful dandelion in the meadow. He had bright yellow flowers that attracted the loveliest butterflies, busy bees, and other insects. They would come to drink his sweet nectar, saying it was the tastiest they'd ever had.

All the other dandelions looked up to Ori. He was special. Even the Sun seemed to shine brighter just for him. Each day, its warm rays helped Ori grow bigger and more beautiful.

News about Ori's beauty spread far and wide, and insects from everywhere wanted to see him. Many ants left their work and traveled a long way just to look at Ori. Grasshoppers jumped over fields and forests to witness his beauty. Even fireflies, glowing in the dark, flew to the meadow at night to see Ori's bright yellow color.

The clouds in the sky liked Ori too. On hot days, when all the flowers wished for rain, the clouds full of rainwater would often stop right above Ori and give him a drink.

Ori's first few weeks were like a fairy tale. He was the star of the meadow, and all the creatures around thought he was very special.

But as we all know, things on this planet always change. Nothing stays the same forever. A little raindrop will dry up, a caterpillar will become a butterfly, and after spring comes summer. Everything changes, and so did Ori.

One morning, Ori woke up to find that his bright yellow flowers were gone. Just the day before, he had hundreds of tiny yellow petals. But now, they had turned into a tight little ball. Ori felt very sad and confused. "Why did this happen to me?" he wondered.

Looking around, Ori saw that he wasn't the only one who had changed. All the other dandelions had turned into these tight little balls, too.

One of the dandelions said, "This must be a curse. We got too much attention, and it's all Ori's fault. If he hadn't been so bright and pretty, we would still have our flowers."

Ori felt very sad when the other dandelions blamed him. He was so upset that he didn't talk to anyone for a few days.

But then, something amazing happened! One morning, all the dandelions, including Ori, found that they had changed again. Instead of the tight little ball, they now had fluffy white balls on their stems. Ori's fluffy ball was the fluffiest and whitest of them all.

Ori looked at his new fluffy ball and panicked. "It's so light and delicate. What if the wind blows it away?" he thought.

Worried about his fluffy ball, he came up with a plan. He decided to grow big, strong leaves to protect it from the wind. He worked hard, and soon his leaves were big enough to cover the fluffy ball like a shield.

Ori used his big leaves to protect his fluffy ball from the wind. He was always looking at the sky, worried about the weather. Sometimes, the wind was strong and blew away some of his fluff, which made Ori very sad. He felt like a part of him was leaving every time a piece of fluff flew away.

One day, dark clouds rolled in behind the mountain, making everything look scary. "What's happening?" Ori asked.

"A big storm is coming," a rabbit said as it hurried by. "It's going to be a very strong storm with lots of wind and rain. I have to go. Be safe!"

Ori was scared. He had never seen such dark clouds before. The storm sounded very dangerous.

Suddenly, Ori could smell the rain coming. He also felt something else in the air, something strong and powerful: the wind. Ori looked up and saw a white shape floating above the meadow, moving right toward him.

"Get ready!" yelled another dandelion. And then, the wind arrived with a big whoosh.

One by one, Ori's fluffy puffs started to fly away with the wind. Ori felt very sad, saying goodbye to each puff. He was scared and thought, "Why did I have to be a dandelion? First, I was a bright beautiful flower, and now I'm just a puff that the wind can blow away."

Then the meadow got very dark as the storm clouds covered the sky. Ori felt big raindrops falling on him. Thunder boomed around the mountain, which made Ori even more scared. "I don't want anything bad to happen," he cried out loud.

Just then, he heard a strange voice. It was the wind, talking to him! At first, Ori couldn't understand what it was saying.

"I don't know your language," Ori told the wind.

"I'm sorry," the wind said in Ori's language. "I forgot you don't speak like we do. Why are you so scared?"

"I'm afraid of what you might do to my puffs," Ori replied.

The wind seemed surprised. "I don't want to hurt you. I'm here to help. Don't you know what happens to your puffs when I blow them away?"

Ori thought they just flew away and disappeared. But the wind explained something amazing. "Each puff is a little seed. I help spread them around so new dandelions can grow. You were once a puff from another dandelion, and now it's your turn to help make more dandelions. You're part of a big, wonderful cycle of life."

Ori was still worried. Now the wind was telling him that letting go of his fluffy puffs was good, that it was how new dandelions grew. "How do I know you're telling the truth?" he asked the wind. "I'm afraid of what might happen."

The wind replied gently, "It's okay to be scared, Ori. But change is part of life. You were once a bright yellow flower, and now you're a fluffy puffball. Both are natural parts of being a dandelion. Everything changes, and that's okay. It's part of a big, beautiful cycle, on a big, beautiful planet."

"I wish I could understand better," Ori said.

"Just trust me, Ori. You're important just by being here. And you will keep being a dandelion for many years, changing from a flower to a puffball and back again. Are you ready to let your puffs go and start new dandelions?"

Ori thought about it and decided to trust the wind. "Okay, wind. Where will they go?"

"Some will land nearby, and others will go down to the river. They'll grow and make new meadows," the wind explained.

"Please make sure they're safe," Ori said.

"I promise," said the wind.

Ori closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, he saw his fluffy puffs flying away like tiny parachutes. They looked so pretty floating in the air. For a little while, it looked like they were dancing together, moving at the same time. A beautiful rainbow appeared, and Ori watched his puffs fly against it. It was a wonderful sight. Ori felt happy and hopeful, no longer afraid of what the future might bring.

And now, dear young readers, you might wonder what happened to Ori. Let me put your mind at ease by telling you that Ori lived a long and happy life, making over 10,000 puffs. Those puffs grew into new dandelions all over the world. So, the next time you see a dandelion, remember it could be one of Ori's family. Let it grow and be a reminder of the amazing cycle of life.
